My faith commands me to take care of those in need, particularly the children. Then in 2008, our nation faced a serious financial crisis. During that crisis, funding for mental health became disrupted, and children suffered. The crushing need to help our children led me to walk across America to tell everyone who would listen about the needs of children with emotional issues, behavioral issues, and developmental disabilities. Little did I know at the outset of my walk that it would become a walk of life’s lessons learned about the beautiful, decent, caring people in our nation. During my walk, my cynicism was replaced with hope, with gratitude, and with renewed faith in mankind. I was renewed spiritually and emotionally by the people I met along my journey. My walk started as a spiritual journey. It was a walk of atonement and a walk of gratitude. I always told people that I came from a very poor family. My mom struggled. Years later, after seeing what many of the children at Good Shepherd have gone through, I realized that I was not poor at all. In fact, I came from an extremely wealthy family who just happened to not have any money. I never once doubted that my mom and my brothers and sisters and family loved me. The children of Good Shepherd and the sisters have taught me to be grateful for the wonderful gifts that I have been granted caretaker of. The walk of atonement was a time to reflect and ask those people that I have hurt in my life to forgive me, those people in my life whom I have disappointed to pray for me, and those people in my life that I have helped that they would help another. I realized later in life that I learned much more from my mistakes than I had from my successes. The walk was an opportunity to write about, pray about, and seek forgiveness for. Atonement goes well beyond being forgiven. As a Catholic, I know that my Savior forgives my sins, but that does not alleviate my responsibility to atone for what I have done or what I have failed to do. When atonement is sought, behaviors change. The cycle of forgiveness is then complete, and true family healing can occur. I was hoping that during my walk, the Holy Spirit would guide me and give me the wisdom that I would need to develop a program to help children in need. Little did I know that the lessons I had hoped to learn were overwhelmed by the life’s lessons learned while I walked across America. Join me in reliving the amazing stories of my walk across America for children. It’s all good!

Who will be triumphant? Who is going to win? Gus, the muss with the fuss and the puss or the 82 Evil Gods? Oh it is so on! “Confidence, fortitude, pride, persistence, fearlessness and focus are some of the true treasures of the spirit that can get you past defeat, help you build a business, raise a family and leave a valuable legacy. The lessons Joe Massengale learned back in the piney woods around Marshall, Texas, and gave to his sons to take into the world are some of the same ones I hope my children, my congregation, the kids in my youth center and my customers get from me.” —From the Foreword by George Foreman Joe Massengale rose above his hardscrabble roots to become a successful Beverly Hills businessman, creating a tree service from scratch and building it into an enduring and profitable enterprise. Through years of hard work, Joe achieved the prosperous life he sought but never forgot the life lessons he learned along the way, especially those his father Hugh taught him. He made sure to impart those lessons to his six sons, each of whom became a success in his own right. What his sons learned from Joe—what it means to be a man, a father, a son, a productive member of society, a person of integrity—is brought to life in Six Lessons for Six Sons. Joe tells his story in vignettes interwoven with observations from his sons, who talk about how they’ve put these simple yet resonant values into practice. Notable contributors—including Guy Bluford, the first African-American in space; Academy Award–winning actress Anjelica Huston; and Olympic Gold Medal–winning decathlete Rafer Johnson—offer perspectives on how the messages at the core of Joe’s story have enriched their own lives and, most important, how they can enrich yours. Six Lessons for Six Sons is a proven blueprint for personal accomplishment and fulfillment, a stirring story of one family’s journey through a century of American change, and an inspiration for anyone who wants to become a positive role model for others. What if success was as simple as six lessons? Lesson One: Confidence Believe in yourself, and other people will, too. Lesson Two: Fortitude Find the strength to keep trying, no matter how hard you’ve tried before. Lesson Three: Pride Pride is a commitment: to your family and—most of all—to yourself. Lesson Four: Persistence Learn from your triumphs but also pay attention to what the hard knocks have to teach you. Lesson Five: Fearlessness Fear is always looking for a crack in your foundation. Keep yours solid. Lesson Six: Focus You are free to be the person you want to be—but you have to work for it. Visit sixlessons.com From the Hardcover edition.

Church Folk Some Messed Up Folk

The real names have been changed to protect the guilty, and should the likeness of any character in this book appear to resemble any individual, it is purely intentional. Also I have deliberately embellished on certain factual accounts in the book, purely for effect. This book is being written, to let church-folk everywhere know, that you are not alone, and that the goings on at your local church are not isolated incidences, there is mess in every church, and my prayer is that you will stand fast, stay put, and put the devil on the run. There were no collaborators, no extensive research done, no accolades to give to anyone. This is one mans journey from faith to faith, through his own eyes. If the book is a failure, I take full responsibility, the failure is not in God, it's in me. I am simply saying what the spirit is saying to me, and through me; "Thus saith the Lord"
